Unemployment in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, there is a social safety net that offers temporary financial support when losing your job or finishing a temporary contract. The Dutch unemployment benefit is called WW-uitkering, organised via UWV (Netherlands Employee Insurance Agency) and comes with certain conditions.

Application conditions:

You may be eligible for unemployment benefits if you:

  • Worked at least 26 of the last 36 weeks before becoming unemployed
  • Did not leave your job voluntarily
  • Are able and available to work
  • Are actively seeking employment
  • For non-EU citizens: You must have a valid residence and work permit at the time of application

Financial support:

  • 75% of your previous gross salary (up to a legal maximum) for 2 months, 70% after that
  • The minimum duration is 3 months; you may qualify for longer depending on your work history
  • Benefits are paid monthly and are taxable income

Responsibilities when receiving WW uitkering

  • Register with UWV as a job seeker
  • Apply for suitable jobs
  • Be willing to accept suitable work, including outside academia
  • Report any changes (e.g., illness, holidays, travel or moving abroad) to UWV
  • Participate in reintegration or training programs, if offered

Failing to meet these obligations may result in reduced or cancelled benefits.

Helpful resources

  • UWV (Employee Insurance Agency) – Apply for benefits and manage your status: www.uwv.nl
  • Your local municipality (“gemeente” in Dutch) – For social services and financial help
  • IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) – For residency and visa-related issues: www.ind.nl
  • University HR / Postdoc Office – Many offer legal or career transition support

Specifics for international researchers

If you’re not a Dutch or EU/EEA citizen:

  • Unemployment may impact your residence permit. Contact the IND immediately to understand your options: www.ind.nl
  • Some services and communication from UWV or your municipality may be in Dutch — ask for English support or assistance from your university’s HR/legal office
  • You may also be eligible for other allowances (e.g., housing, health insurance) depending on your income

Final Tips

  • Prepare early if your contract is ending — gather documents, check your registration with UWV
  • Make sure your DigiD is working: this is essential for applying for any benefit
  • Register job applications and communications with UWV
  • If you’re unsure, ask for help — early support can prevent issues later
